A Call for Electric Vehicles in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: On Monday, Odisha's Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati urged residents to embrace electric vehicles (EVs), particularly in the state's rapidly urbanizing areas, highlighting their importance in curbing pollution and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Speaking at the 42nd Foundation Day of the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) in Bhubaneswar, Kambhampati stressed the necessity for collective efforts to protect the environment and secure a healthier future for all.

He mentioned that the official vehicle fleet of Raj Bhavan has transitioned to EVs, which has significantly lowered its carbon emissions, setting a precedent for others.

The Governor also advocated for the installation of rooftop solar panels, noting that these systems not only decrease electricity costs but also promote clean energy and enable residents to take advantage of government subsidies available through various schemes.

Reflecting on the OSPCB's four-decade history, Dr. Kambhampati commended the Board for its role as a regulator, advisor, and collaborator in harmonizing rapid industrial growth with ecological stewardship.

"This occasion is not just a milestone but a celebration of the Board’s comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to protecting Odisha’s environment," he remarked.

He encouraged citizens and students to engage in the state government's extensive plantation initiative, set to commence on September 17, which aims to plant 7.5 million saplings throughout Odisha.

According to the Governor, this effort will enhance green spaces, improve air quality, and help alleviate the effects of climate change.

Dr. Kambhampati also praised the OSPCB's projects, which include air quality enhancement, river restoration, and real-time monitoring of industrial activities and water bodies.

He applauded the state government's initiatives for electric buses, EV subsidies, interest-free loans, and the broader adoption of rooftop solar energy under the PM Surya Ghar Yojana.

Describing pollution as a significant threat to health, livelihoods, and future generations, he urged the public to minimize plastic usage, manage electronic waste, conserve water, plant trees, and adopt renewable energy sources.

He further encouraged the Board to set ambitious goals for the next decade, focusing on promoting green technologies, establishing zero-waste industries, engaging youth, and utilizing digital tools for environmental monitoring.
